Annoying and disease-carrying cockroaches are a primary target of our Cape Girardeau pest control programs. On the other side of the world, cockroaches are an unexpected solution to a serious environmental problem.

Cockroaches Go “Green”

With a population of 1.3 billion and counting, China generates too much food waste to be effectively handled by landfill disposal. At one time, waste was used as pig feed until outbreaks of African swine fever forced a ban of the practice.

Shandong Qiaobin Agricultural Technology Co. has come up with an innovative solution. A colony of one billion cockroaches housed at their plant in Jinan, a city of seven million people, is fed 50 tons of kitchen waste each day.

The cockroaches’ role in the food chain doesn’t end there. After they die, the insects make a rich source of protein for pigs and other livestock. Shandong Qiaobin plans to open three more plants within the next year with the goal of processing one-third of the total food waste produced in Jinan.

Medicinal Cockroaches?

Entrepreneurs in Sichuan are creating cockroach “farms” to take advantage of their reputed medicinal value. According to Wen Jianguo, manager of a cockroach facility at a company called Gooddoctor, essence of cockroach is useful for curing ulcers, stomach wounds and even stomach cancer.
